See Ball’s Pyramid

There are many natural wonders around Lord Howe Island – and one you will see as soon as you fly into the island is Ball’s Pyramid. This sea stack is a whopping 552 metres tall, making it the largest sea stack in the world.

Sea stacks are formed from the side of cliffs that have erroded over thousands of years, seperating a part of the cliff that looks like a stack of rocks in the middle of the water.

There are three ways you can experience Lord Howe Island’s resident sea stack. You can book a flight to take you around Lord Howe Island’s best sights, including Ball’s Stack, which will allow you to have a birds eye view of the naturally occuring feature. You could also book a boat tour to take you closer to the large rock formation, allowing you to see some of the unique fish and birds around the island. You can also book a snorkel or dive around Ball’s Pyramid, which will allow you to see the stack up close and personal, while swimming amongst the fish in the bright blue waters.

Deep dive

Lord Howe Island is home to one of the best diving spots in Australia – the Amiralty Islands. These islands are particularly prized as a hot scuba spot for their sheer underwater drop-offs teeming with coral and sea life.

The dive site is known for its variety of underwater scenery, and divers can explore many different areas. The reef here contains plenty of marine life, so divers enjoy exploring the colourful coral reefs, which are teeming with tropical fish and turtles. You’ll also see lots of puffer fish, nudibranchs and other colourful sea creatures.

Feed fish on the beach

Something unique you can do one some of the beaches on Lord Howe Island – inluding Ned’s Beach – is feed the fish that swim around you in the crystal clear waters. You can buy a cup of fish food that you can use to have dozens of fish flocking to you in seconds.

The waters around Lord Howe Island are crystal clear, which lets you see exactly which fish you have enticed closer to you. Be prepared – these fish are not shy and will come up to you! Get ready for your new fishy friends to brush up against you as you sprinkle feed over the water.

Lord Howe Island is home to many endemic species of plants an animals.

Birds

If you are an avid bird watcher, there are over 200 bird species recorded on Lord Howe Island! Two of these species, the Lord Howe Island Woodhen and the Lord Howe Island Silvereye, are endemic to Lord Howe Island – meaning they cannot be found anywhere else in the world! You are defininitely in for a treat if you can capture a snap of these two local birds.

Insects

There are around 1600 insects species on Lord Howe Island, including around 60% that cannot be found in the rest of the world. These insects include the Lord Howe Island Phasmid, which is a large stick instinct that was thought to have been made exinct in the early 1900s. In 2001, however, the Phasmid was found on Ball’s Pyramid, with efforts to recoup its population underway.

Plants

Lord Howe Island has 241 specied of plants – 44% of which can’t be found anywnere else. While you’re on Lord Howe Island holidays, take a look at the Lord Howe Kentia palm – you might find it very familiar! These palms are often found inside hotels (and living rooms) around the world. Plus, you can buy some Kentia seedlings from the airport as you leave as a souveneire you can grow and keep for many years to come.
